BRICS’ Cautious Steps towards Global Restraint

The recent BRICS summit has yielded a joint declaration urging “maximum restraint” in the Middle East. This move is being hailed as a diplomatic victory for India, which currently chairs the bloc. But what does this development really mean? Is it a bold step towards challenging Western dominance, or merely a half-hearted attempt to paper over deep-seated divisions?

The joint declaration’s emphasis on avoiding actions that could further aggravate the situation in the Middle East reflects the bloc’s member states’ divergent interests. Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE are all embroiled in the conflict, with Iran being the target of US-Israeli strikes. Rather than taking a firm stance against these actions, BRICS has opted for a watered-down condemnation of unilateral war.

For six months into the Iran war, BRICS failed to issue a joint statement, highlighting its inability to speak with one voice on pressing matters. As Anuradha Mitra Chenoy, Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, pointed out in an interview, “de-dollarization” is a misleading narrative that obscures the reality of BRICS’ modest ambitions.

The joint declaration’s call for maximum restraint serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of unilateral actions. The Iran war has had far-reaching impacts on food security, oil supplies, and fertilizers – all essential components of global trade. It’s no coincidence that countries in the Global South are bearing the brunt of this conflict.

As India continues to push for UN Security Council reform, it remains to be seen whether this declaration is a genuine attempt to challenge Western dominance or merely a tactical maneuver to boost its own diplomatic credentials. The bloc’s ability to translate words into action will ultimately determine its impact on the global stage.

But until they demonstrate a willingness to take bold, concrete actions, their influence will remain limited to cautious statements of solidarity.
