Their findings suggest that these monkeys can adapt to different environments with ease, highlighting the limitations of relying solely on fossilized foot bones to reconstruct an organism’s locomotor habits.
Fannin notes that people are making behavioral inferences from fossils, which can be misleading. “Some say a monkey can’t vertically climb as well as an ape can,” he says. “We’re saying there’s a functional equivalence here.” This functional equivalence underscores the importance of considering the complexities of an organism’s behavior when interpreting fossil evidence.
